Winning is not important participating is

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Yesterday, you made beautiful posters for a competition. After I submitted your entries you both were super excited and started listing all the things you are going to buy, when you will get the prize money. You were, again and again, asking me about a few other options you can buy from the prize money. Seeing you this excited I couldn't help but wonder what if you didn't get a prize. I thought you both will be disheartened so I started my well-practiced speech that, "baby winning is not everything the process of participation is". Again you gave me the same response "it's ok! we know we were just making the list in case we win".  I know that's not true, you were very confident about your entries for the competition and you actually believe that you will get a prize. I genuinely feel, confidence is good. But here, I didn't know how to deal with this whole thing.

This made me think that this is actually not your fault or anyone else's. This is how we are doing these things. In the name of motivation, we always project the prize first and then tell the kids to participate. May be motivation but now it is more greediness that is associated with it. Although, I am very happy that it really enhances your creativity and you came up with a wonderful piece of art but your love for prize money is what bothers me here. Today I want to tell you this again. Winning matters but winning is not everything, the process of participation, and doing something creative is far more important.

Winning is exciting. It also motivates you. It gives you confidence that you stand somewhere. It encourages you to participate more. But if this becomes your only goal then if by chance you lose, it will disappoint you. I am not saying that because of the fear of losing, you shouldn't try to win. What I want to convey is don't stick to the concept of winning too much. More fun is in participating. When you participate you learn, when you participate more you learn more, you get exposure and when you win it is great even if you don't end up winning, it is also winning since you learned so much. Maybe you didn't get the prize that day, but definitely, in the future, your hard work pays off in one way or the other.

Please participate more and more...

Good Luck!!

  1. Participation, enjoying the entire process and learning from the process is equally important. Winning should not be the end goal.
