Understanding Responsibility

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

It is amazing to see a child grow, that too into a responsible person is amazing. Responsibility is a very big term. One needs to understand it properly. In very simple words being responsible means you do the things you are expected to do and accept the results of your actions no matter positive or negative. Responsibility and duty both are different terms. Duty is a moral commitment to something or someone whereas responsibility is an ability to act at one's own will without any supervision. Responsible behavior is said to be made up of five essential elements- honesty, compassion/respect, fairness, accountability, and courage. Being a responsible person is important. It has a broader meaning and can be looked into various paradigms. Being responsible at different stages of life have different meanings. It is important:

  • Being a responsible child to parent
  • Being a responsible sibling
  • Being a responsible student
  • Being a responsible spouse
  • Being a responsible worker
  • Bein a responsible citizen
  • Being a responsible human
Responsibility is something all should learn. By developing responsibility one can reach their full potential. Responsibility involves, making decisions, being trusted, and learning to take credit for your actions. As adults, we try to encourage kids to be responsible by giving them small tasks and helping them while they try to complete it. Forcing and pointing out the mistakes never help here, in fact, it could result in their low self-esteem instead of making them more responsible. So, please don't run when your teacher asks you to take responsibility for particular tasks or to be a monitor for a particular work. These may be the smaller steps but will surely lead you to be a responsible person in the future.

Good Luck!!
