Zeal of Happiness

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Happiness is a choice. We can add the zeal of happiness in our lives. Zeal is passion or enthusiasm or eagerness In pursuit of an objective. It is not an emotion rather devotion of a person to a cause or an objective.

Whatever you decide to do make sure it makes you happy
-Paulo Coelho

There are a lot of factors which are related to our happiness.

  • Authority
  • Friendship
  • Family
  • Wealth
  • Education
  • Religion
  • Health

We need to prioritize them in our own way. If you are clear with your priorities, you can direct yourself easily towards happiness. The zeal of happiness is something that is important to live a healthy life. Instead of having small materialistic goals, this should be the main aim of someone's life. after all, happiness is the only key to balance your mind, body, and soul. If you have the zeal no one can stop you to attain happiness in your life. It teaches you how to be more passionate in life and keep your happiness your first priority than anyone else's.

There are so many things which could nurture your zeal of happiness

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Traveling
  • Self-love
  • Mental fitness
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Good food

You will be facing a lot of difficult times in your life ahead. There will be times when you will feel unhappy or confused just remember one thing your zeal of happiness could help you sail through those times.

Good Luck!!

Yesterday Is Gone

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Yesterday is the day before today. One very important thing we heard a lot of times but never understood really is, time never repeats itself. I don't know how much truth is there in quantum mechanics or all the time travel theories but, as far as I know, time never repeats itself. The situation can be repeated but the system associated with it won't. This is what we need to understand and accept. This will only help us to value present and give us all, hope for the future.

Yesterday is not only a day it is the past and it is gone. Dwelling on the past will do us no good. One needs to look forward to a new sunrise, a new day.

I clearly remember a few lines which I studied in my school time said by Mother Teresa

Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come.
We have only today.
Let us begin.

These are the lines of hope. These are the lines of a doer, not a quitter. If in future you feel low thinking about yesterday or your past just read these lines. I am not saying one needs to forget yesterday. After all, yesterday is the one which makes you experienced. It makes you learn all the good and bad in life. yesterday only builts or awakens your conscience. But with all this one needs to learn that it is gone. One must learn and move forward. If not learned we tend to base our thoughts, our emotions on yesterday. It will be yesterday, who will decide how we feel today. It is dangerous sometimes. It makes people living in the past sometimes.

The future gives hope. It gives you a goal. It is good to plan but it needs action, which can be taken today to shape the future. So, today is the day. It is not possible to change the past and to see the future so, take your learning and make most of today and move forward.

Good Luck!!

Xenophobia Is Not Racism

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

"Mom I am not going to use this. This is made in China. Why have you brought this? You should not buy anything which is made in china. They spread COVID 19". Knock! Knock! It is a wake-up call for me. These are the exact words that you, my dear ten-year-old son said to me when I gave you colors for Holi. But you still used them saying It's ok they are Holi colors. Now, whenever you watch television and if there is some news related to Chinese people you say "we should boycott them" and in the same evening you watch Chinese movies saying they are funny. This made me realize two important things first, even I didn't say it to you ever but you are sounding like a xenophobic, I hope this ends soon. And second is that whatever the case is when it comes to your interest your rules tend to change.

This is a very crucial time for the whole world. COVID 19 is spreading everywhere. Whenever there is a threat, different personalities of people can be seen. Some of them will emerge as fighters and help others too some of them emerge as blamers they don't do anything but try to put the blame of failures on others. In this current situation too, everyone is blaming a particular set of people for this pandemic. The irony is this particular set of people doesn't belong to one place they are already living in different countries, in fact, they are the residents, but in this time of crisis, everyone looks at these people as a threat and behaves badly with them. This actually is resulting in xenophobia.

Xenophobia is fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners. This phobia is spreading everywhere. When we go to the market to buy essentials it is obvious one gets scared looking at other people especially if their looks are similar as of Chinese. Actually right now the situation is such where everyone is scared of anyone who is a stranger or a foreigner.

Xenophobia is different from Racism. Racism is a broader spectrum. Xenophobia could be a starting point to it but it is debatable that it could lead to racism or not. Xenophobia is a phobia that could be present or develop in any person in such situations the world is facing right now. Racism is more of a social evil that is sadly present in the world and also quite permanent in nature. Xenophobia is a personal phobia that varies from person to person whereas racism belongs to a particular group. A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder defined by excessive fear of a thing or situation. One could get rid of it easily and sometimes with a lot of difficulties. Xenophobia which I think most of the people are facing now is more likely to be temporary because of the situation in the world.

There are chances where we might face such situations in the future also. For this one needs to be prepared in every way and needs to learn how to cope with this phobia. First and foremost tell yourself:
Whatever is happening is nobody's fault.
This time too shall pass.
There will be a new day tomorrow.
Fight together not against each other.
I am just scared everything will be fine.
I am being loved so I should love all.
I should help as much as I can.

Good Luck!!

Winning is not important participating is

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Yesterday, you made beautiful posters for a competition. After I submitted your entries you both were super excited and started listing all the things you are going to buy, when you will get the prize money. You were, again and again, asking me about a few other options you can buy from the prize money. Seeing you this excited I couldn't help but wonder what if you didn't get a prize. I thought you both will be disheartened so I started my well-practiced speech that, "baby winning is not everything the process of participation is". Again you gave me the same response "it's ok! we know we were just making the list in case we win".  I know that's not true, you were very confident about your entries for the competition and you actually believe that you will get a prize. I genuinely feel, confidence is good. But here, I didn't know how to deal with this whole thing.

This made me think that this is actually not your fault or anyone else's. This is how we are doing these things. In the name of motivation, we always project the prize first and then tell the kids to participate. May be motivation but now it is more greediness that is associated with it. Although, I am very happy that it really enhances your creativity and you came up with a wonderful piece of art but your love for prize money is what bothers me here. Today I want to tell you this again. Winning matters but winning is not everything, the process of participation, and doing something creative is far more important.

Winning is exciting. It also motivates you. It gives you confidence that you stand somewhere. It encourages you to participate more. But if this becomes your only goal then if by chance you lose, it will disappoint you. I am not saying that because of the fear of losing, you shouldn't try to win. What I want to convey is don't stick to the concept of winning too much. More fun is in participating. When you participate you learn, when you participate more you learn more, you get exposure and when you win it is great even if you don't end up winning, it is also winning since you learned so much. Maybe you didn't get the prize that day, but definitely, in the future, your hard work pays off in one way or the other.

Please participate more and more...

Good Luck!!

Violence

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Violence is a physical force intended to hurt and damage. This is what written in the dictionary I have at home. This really kept me thinking, being a mom is exciting, it is great, there are so many things that can be listed that how amazing it is to be your mom. But I want to admit that it is not easy. We are now living in a world where there are so many expectations and ideals associated with a single word. Being a mom is not only a mom. Being a dad is not only being a dad. Everything is complex. If you try to make a map of connections it will a spider's web for sure. With all the pressure; trying to be a perfect mother, a perfect guide, a perfect person we all end up doing a lot of mistakes. Sometimes I feel that there are a lot of mistakes I did for which I am still trying to forgive myself, among these, I have no shame to admit that a few times I lost my temper with you and slapped you. Because this is what we have grown up with whether its a TV series, any Bollywood movie, our teachers, even our parents we have seen that it's ok! to slap your kid if they misbehave. Parents have a right. But gradually I realized it is the worst thing I imitated in my life. This too is an act of violence, it doesn't matter that my intentions were not to hurt or damage you but I think on some unseen level it did. And I am really sorry about this. I am trying and will promise that it won't repeat again ever. This is the only act of violence I this I did so far other than fighting with my big brother when we were kids. Oh common! it sounded like I did it like so many times, Yes! it sounded that heavy but I assure you that is not the case but still, it won't repeat. Now, coming to the point, violence is definitely not something that should be accepted. There are different types of violence, some of them are:

  • Economic violence
  • Political violence
  • Sexual or gender violence
  • Domestic violence
  • Cultural violence
  • Religious violence
  • Information violence
  • Violence by cyberbullying
  • Violence as per the act of terrorism

These types of violence can be observed easily near you. Witnessing is also kind of accepting it. I know in today's time it is difficult to act immediately but something should be done to stop these acts permanently. There is no parameter to find out the degree of violence because it is very difficult to find out how much a certain act harm or affect a human bearing it. Few damages cannot be seen or felt by anyone other than the person himself. The person who faced child molestation can't tell you how hurt he/she is. We should all fight against violence. Violence in any form cannot easily eradicate, it takes an army but if everyone does their bit it creates one. Do your bit. Help others too. We will surely get a better future.

Good Luck!!

Understanding Responsibility

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

It is amazing to see a child grow, that too into a responsible person is amazing. Responsibility is a very big term. One needs to understand it properly. In very simple words being responsible means you do the things you are expected to do and accept the results of your actions no matter positive or negative. Responsibility and duty both are different terms. Duty is a moral commitment to something or someone whereas responsibility is an ability to act at one's own will without any supervision. Responsible behavior is said to be made up of five essential elements- honesty, compassion/respect, fairness, accountability, and courage. Being a responsible person is important. It has a broader meaning and can be looked into various paradigms. Being responsible at different stages of life have different meanings. It is important:

  • Being a responsible child to parent
  • Being a responsible sibling
  • Being a responsible student
  • Being a responsible spouse
  • Being a responsible worker
  • Bein a responsible citizen
  • Being a responsible human
Responsibility is something all should learn. By developing responsibility one can reach their full potential. Responsibility involves, making decisions, being trusted, and learning to take credit for your actions. As adults, we try to encourage kids to be responsible by giving them small tasks and helping them while they try to complete it. Forcing and pointing out the mistakes never help here, in fact, it could result in their low self-esteem instead of making them more responsible. So, please don't run when your teacher asks you to take responsibility for particular tasks or to be a monitor for a particular work. These may be the smaller steps but will surely lead you to be a responsible person in the future.

Good Luck!!

Tolerance

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

Think about your lifestyle the way you live, your beliefs, your way of talking, thinking, and the environment. Now take a look around you and think about someone else's, you might found some aspects of other's life which annoys you, which are according to you are irritable. This often makes difficult for us to connect to other people. This could be the case with any of your family members or your roommate or your fellow student or your neighbor. Here, Tolerance plays an important role. Tolerance as per many psychologists is respecting other people's beliefs or ways of living. Tolerance is actually a term used to describe other people's attitudes and behaviors which maybe be disapproved or treated by us as abnormal, nevertheless, we try to respect them even if you don't tolerate the other person's behavior. Tolerance is a virtue that helps us to put up with those who have different ways and opinions and outlook on life. Tolerance is one of the conditions of good manners hence it is important in everyone's life. If someone is tolerant it helps you stay at peace and gives happiness in social settings.

Being Intolerant

If I am saying all this it doesn't mean that I am myself a very tolerant person. I wish I could be more tolerant of other people. Being intolerant doesn't mean one needs to show anger or have a temperament. It could discomfort you on other levels also. Being an intolerant person some people attain a know-it-all attitude in life even when they don't know about a certain thing they always deny to accept it. This is unhealthy and lead you to bigger problems in life.
An intolerant person always has words but their depth is nowhere to be found. They could have an extreme line of thoughts which often shows their rigidity. This could result in a lot of relationship issues too.

Younger or older who are more tolerant

This is quite unsure how to generalize who are more tolerant but as some theories state, young kids are less tolerant. This may be because of the lack of their experiences in comparison to an older person. But even if younger ones are less tolerant it is always seen that they bounce back their behavior earlier than any adult can do.

Why people tolerate unacceptable behavior

Sometimes it is unclear to a person what is acceptable and what is not. Even if they are clear about it some of them don't feel they have the internal power to stand for themselves. Because of this, they tolerate unacceptable behavior. This can be easily be seen nowadays in schools as bullying. If one could look at the deep ends we can also see that that accepting such behaviors could be because they themselves had been punished in life so they are too scared to say anything. Sometimes people are too busy to even care so they accept whatever comes in their way.

When we should not tolerate

Tolerance is not meant to encourage a weak-kneed attitude to life. It has a limit and beyond that, it may become a social crime. It is very important to understand when we should not tolerate other people's behavior. When accepting the behavior means going against your basic values as dishonesty, social wrongs it should not be accepted. We should not be complaisant towards personal attacks. Tolerance is a virtue only when it comes to the principles of morality and good cause towards life. There are various facets of tolerance which should not be acceptable spiritual, religious, racial and gender unacceptable behaviors should not be tolerated.

Good Luck!!

Saying Sorry

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

One of the magical words is 'Sorry'. This is what I learned from your poem of preschool. I have never learned this in my school. It doesn't mean that I don't know how to say sorry or don't know it's importance. It's just that I don't have such poems in my school and never learned values specifically as a subject in school. We use to learn all this in our daily activities of school and home or just via socializing. Nowadays it is a mandatory subject in school, as well as every subject, needs to put a value-based question in each chapter of theirs because it's a hard truth that nowadays, we are losing our values.
There are three magical words thankyou, please, and sorry. All of these we definitely have a habit to hear on a daily basis. Among these also, saying thank you and please are easier than saying sorry. At your age, right now, it is really difficult for Aayra also to say sorry to you and she is just a 5-year-old child. As we grow old saying sorry becomes more and more difficult. Saying sorry comes with a very big word that is acceptance. Saying sorry means you accept that you did a mistake or feeling regret or feeling sympathy. Saying sorry is difficult because:

  • It shows your vulnerability.
  • It shows your acceptance of mistakes.
  • Few people see it as a sign of weakness but actually, it shows how strong you are.
  • It confirms your guilt.
  • Sometimes one feels as if he/she is not worthy of forgiveness.
  • Saying sorry seems to viewed as a means to draw attention to the mistake.
  • Sometimes you feel forgiveness from others is not possible.

But still, you should say sorry. Saying sorry is good but it needs to be said genuinely. It gives you a chance to see everything in a new light.  It is important as:

  • It carries a lot of weight if it is genuine.
  • It helps to accept yourself the way you are.
  • It helps to ease your pressure.
  • It helps to analyze the viewpoint of others.
  • It helps to forgive.
  • It helps to forget and let go.
  • It helps you to maintain a healthy relationship.
  • It helps to help others sometimes.
So, don't think too much and say sorry. But remember one shouldn't say sorry when saying so means you have to compromise with your values and self-respect.

Good Luck!!

Read Write And Reflect

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

We all heard about the famous 3 R's. Before it is read, write, and arithmetic, the three basic skills one needs to learn in school which came into existence around 200 years back. Now as times are changing we have new 3R's reduce, reuse, and recycle. It is all about the need of an hour. I want to introduce you to my three 3R's of life that is Read, Write, and Reflect. from the past few years, this is what kept me going and helped me to evolve as a better person. In life, there will be many phases some will be good, some will be great but some will not be that good. Sometimes we feel stuck or we feel that we are following a monotonous routine day by day. At that time these 3R's will take you to a new setting. To understand yourself, to sort your thoughts and to evolve too with changing times these 3R's are a total bliss.

Reading is a key that opens doors for you. Sometimes when you end reading a book you feel you are a changed person. It stimulates our imagination. It opens our hearts as well as our minds. In very simple words reading:

  • Gives knowledge
  • Enhances vocabulary
  • Strengthens mind
  • Improves memory
  • Improves focus and concentration
  • Reduces stress
  • Entertains
  • Gives better sleep
  • Enhances imagination
  • Gives wisdom
  • Improves thought process
  • Promotes mental health

Writing is more associated with words that need to be out of your system. Sometimes you can't speak things, sometimes you do not remember things properly, sometimes on bad days when spoken words can ruin your relationships with others writing helps. Writing helps you to record everything you want. In simple ways writing:

  • Gives you a way of expression
  • Gives you an effective way to communicate on different levels
  • Reduces stress
  • Calms the body and nerves
  • Unleashes creativity
  • Helps in reducing depression and anxiety

Reflection here is more related to your thoughts and experiences that you gain from your life first handed or second-handed by living them or learning them. Reflection is very important. It is basically knowing your own self. It is related to mostly emotional intelligence which helps in developing a better understanding. To understand easily reflecting:

  • Gives meaning to your experiences
  • Fosters personal development
  • Help you to understand your strengths and limitations
  • Gives wisdom
  • Makes you see things with a different angle too
  • Increases problem-solving skills
  • Can help to forgive
  • Gives a sense of closure to many open-ended things.
  • Gives satisfaction
  • Gives us a chance to be a better person

Please try my this 3r's rule and see for yourself it will help you in some way or the other. In my opinion, these will be the 3R's which will be needed in our rapidly changing future.

Good Luck!!

Questions...

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

When I was a kid I was told by my elders to ask questions. Even as a teacher I have always been told by my teachers to ask questions and encourage your students too to ask questions. But let me tell you the truth, it is good to ask questions, even others like them, they give you an idea that people are listening to you but that is not true every time. Questions are really tricky, I am not talking about tricky questions which are HOTS and help you to crack any entrance exam or so, I am saying questions are tricky as when we don't ask them everyone pushes us to ask and if we do, we being told that you ask too many questions. I really didn't get it that asking many questions is a problem or answering many are.

Anyways I learned an important thing here, asking questions is important. Even if you don't get the answers you need. It will unsettle something inside you that you crave to find their answers. Few people try once or twice if they didn't get any answer they let it go but few try harder which makes them achiever, an achiever in life, achiever of inner satisfaction. When we talk about scientists, mathematicians, artists there is one common thing among all and that is, they ask questions to themselves. This is a very important thing to understand that although we can get answers to the questions we have from others but to get the bigger answers one has to ask those deeper questions to himself first. By asking questions I didn't mean to doubt yourself. It means to ask all the deeper questions first to yourself and then look for ways how to get their answers and in the way of finding the answers, you can seek help.

The beauty of asking questions is that it makes you curious. It allows you to jump to those conversations and things that you are not even part of. This allows you gradually to gain knowledge. But beauty comes in all shades. You need to be careful too. One has to be conscious of its surroundings. Asking questions is healthy but to do it with bad intentions or just to offend others is not right. Even how you ask questions is something one should take care of. Asking questions is also an art and asking good questions is an expertise. I remember reading an article a few years back in a local magazine about how to excel in the art of asking questions to your kids. I can't remember the name of the reference but I am sure that the writer was definitely not a parent by then ;p The article kept me thinking that asking questions is actually an art which not only considers the choice of the words we use but how and when to pose the question too.

This applies when you question your self too. By asking questions we can analyze learn and move forward in the face of uncertainty in our lives. But to get the best answer we need to begin with the right question. Sometimes questioning selves enable us to see an old problem in a new light which definitely leads us to a better solution.

So, keep asking questions. Even it annoys me sometimes but I really cherished the way you find your answers one way or the other.

Good Luck!!

Patience And It's Power

Dear Aarush and Aayra,

We are living in the 21st century. Here everything changes at a very fast pace. In fact, your generation is blessed to see changes in every field in a very short span of time. From the phones till the smart TVs, from the real world to the virtual one there are changes everywhere. With this one more thing is changing at a very high speed. before we used to say the generation gap is coming after every 20 years or so but nowadays that too cut short to five years now. the person who is five years younger to you will definitely be a whole new person with the new personality change. to cope up with these changes one must have a very important trait within him or her, that is Patience. It is a key to many such locks which will help you to move further in your life with ease. no matter what age you are whether you are a 5-year-old kid or a 14-year-old teenager even if you are an adult this will help you at every step of yours in life. Patience is much more than this

Patience is the ability to wait, or to continue doing something despite difficulties, or to suffer without complaining or becoming annoyed.

Patience is much more than this. It is a strong determination of will, to victoriously overcome the negative things we confront. It displays tolerance and compassion towards immature people.
when we are impatient we may feel:

  • irritated
  • ignored
  • anxious
  • stressed
  • nervous
  • frustrated
  • misunderstood

Patience will enable you to pick yourself up and see the way out without agitation. Having patience can help you achieve results. With patience, we can give ourselves the benefit of stopping and to consider the effect of our decisions hence give us the power of better decision making. With this, one could be a better listener which will help them reach heights. Now a very important question arises:

How to practice patience? Or How to improve our patience level?

For this one can do many things:
  • don't dwell in the past begin to live each new day as a fresh day
  • take life one day at a time
  • try to eliminate stress factors from your life
  • practice gratitude
    • set small goals for a bigger one to accomplish
    • accept understand and forgive are three very important traits here
    • practice self-love
    • see the realities of life
    • meditate
    • listen to others
    • give yourself time to think, take a pause
    • try to reason yourself
    • deep breathing is magic here
    • try to be polite

    Good Luck!!

    Own Chaotic Thoughts

    Dear Aarush and Aayra,

One of the most powerful thing in this universe is our thoughts. In that too our own thoughts make us who we are. I am not talking about idealism or realism here. I am talking in general about r thoughts influence everything around us. Caught up in our chaotic thoughts which can be influenced by the amount of work we do or kind of experiences we have in our daily life, we bark orders around, Forgetting to make others feel important cogs in the machine as well. No matter how caught up and busy you are you need to sort your thoughts. It is important to pause and work on healthy and appreciative connections with those around you. As we can see in this present scenario everyone is stressed. Not only COVID 19 is the danger here but the stress associated with it too. At this point of time, our thoughts multiply these threats even more. A chaotic mind in very simple words can be understood as a stressed mind. when one has a lot to do and cannot prioritize the work needs to be done. the mind is not able to focus on things and prepares its own thoughts. Sometimes taking a negative trail of thoughts where only darkness could be seen. This needs to be sorted. For one to get rid of these chaotic thoughts one must:

    • Give pause
    • Try to write down what needs to be done
    • A journal could be your best friend here
    • Self-care is important
    • Distract yourself
    • Try meditation
    • Understand your triggers
    • Question your thoughts
    • Talk to someone
These can help you to be free from these chaotic thoughts and help you to bee more sorted with them. This will naturally lead you towards happiness and stress-free life.

    Good Luck!!
